problem setting up local hostip db - error 1604

I'm having a problem setting up a local database. After downloading the sql file, I created a mysql db with the following details:
db: host_ip
user: host_ip_user
pass: ...

From shell, I attempt to load the sql into the empty db:
mysql -uhost_ip_user -p host_ip < hostip_current.sql

After being prompted for the password, and entering it, I get the error message: ERROR 1064 at line 23: You have an error in your SQL syntax near 'ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1' at line 12

Is this because I'm running mysql 3.23.58? Upgrading mysql is not an option right now. What should I do?

It might depend on how your version of MySQL was built or configured. MyISAM is the default storage engine in 3.23, so I would guess the error is due to an incompatible character set.

Try removing the CHARSET=latin1, or replacing occurrences of the line:

by appending something like --compatible=mysql40

assuming most people got a mysql 4.x.x or higher.
